Cherokee is still standing after Irene ripped through our city like a steam engine knocking down trees and power lines. After sitting in our Family Room for a few hours, we made an executive decision to evacuate. This is what we found the next day.
Irene did her fair share of damage to Richmond. There are still 50% of Richmonders without power and lots of trees to clean up. Dominion Virginia Power estimates that all of Richmond’s power will be restored by Saturday morning.
As you drive by neighborhoods around our city, open your windows and you will only hear the sound of generators. Almost every home was affected. It’s amazing.
After a few hours of tender-loving care, Cherokee is like new again… all she needs is her power back.

7220 Cherokee has many unique features that stand out, but the patio and back porch are my favorite. As soon as you see the backyard, the home invites you in with its peaceful brick patio and large covered porch. The porch is large enough for furniture and already contains a swing. The patio has space for more décor as well as your grill and other plants. Ornate ironwork highlights the porch while huge hostas and boxwoods surround the patio.
This space is perfect for entertaining lots of family and friends, but can be private enough to separate you from the rest of the neighborhood. Check out Cherokee for more information.
If you are interested in adding this feature to your home and live in the Richmond area, contact us. If you live outside the Richmond area and are curious, contact your local homebuilder association.

Short Sales are becoming increasingly more common these days due to the economy. A big surprise, I know. So what is a short sale anyway and who should be considering the process?
The definition of a short sale is when your lender agrees to discount your mortgage in order for you to sell your home. In other words, you owe more than you can get for your house. The reputation of a short sale is that it is a long process and should be avoided at all costs. In these economic times, it’s not easy to avoid the short sale. Many of us are losing our jobs or taking a pay cut. It’s tough to continue paying your bills on a lower income. Sellers resort to the short sale because they accept that they can’t make their mortgage payments and they’d like to sell before foreclosure.
Not all sellers qualify to take this route. Sellers, who fall short on their mortgage payments and need to sell, must be approved for the short sale process. Another frightening task in this new economy, but lenders must protect themselves. The best option to see if you qualify is to apply when a contract comes in on your home. You know what the situation is; you have all of the necessary paperwork to prove your situation; you have a contract that is less than what you owe; and your agent has the comparables to prove this contract is realistic.
If you are able to cooperate with your real estate agent and lender and provide all of the paperwork needed to qualify, your short sale process will go smoothly.

Washing Away Soap Scum
I use dishwashing detergent on any stubborn stain, whether it’s a burnt pan or grease stain on the stove. Dishwashing detergent is super-strong and is made to wash away grease on your dishes! It can tackle anything.
Here’s another example how dishwashing detergent will solve a problem quickly!
What You Will Need:
Bleach
Dishwashing Detergent
Water
Old rag
1) Clear away all shampoo bottles, bars of soap, etc. from tub.
2) Squirt about 2 T worth of detergent on most affected areas. Let sit for about 10 minutes.
3) Using a damp rag, scrub detergent away. Rinse several times.
4) Pour two capfuls of bleach over affected areas and let sit.
5) Scrub with damp rag.
6) Voila!
No excuses for a dingy tub during your next Open House!

This is one of those dishes that you dream about the night after you eat it. It was absolutely positively heavenly. My husband’s words were “this stuff’s addictive. Well done.” I was thinking the same thing. I can’t take the credit because it was David Downie from Bon Appétit who came up with an excellent combination. We’ve all heard of melon and prosciutto, but never orange with prosciutto. This was delightful. The sweetness of the orange matched the saltiness of the prosciutto perfectly. Add some cream, cheese and pasta and Downie came up with a masterpiece. I made a few minor changes, but nothing too different. The dish is simple enough yet decadent. I promise you will agree. Try it! You’ll love it as much as we did.
What You Will Need:
(I used olive oil instead of the butter last minute) |
2 oz prosciutto very thinly sliced, coarsely chopped
(I'm loving my new camera) |
1 navel orange
Can you tell? |
½ C heavy cream
½ C finely grated parmesan
½ box of whole wheat linguine
What You Already Have:
2 T olive oil
Large pot
Large skillet
Colander
Zester
Small bowl
Cutting board
1) Cook pasta according to package directions, but remove about 2 minutes before completely cooked. Reserve ¼ C pasta water.
2) Drain in colander.
3) While pasta cooks, zest entire orange and reserve. Cut orange in half and squeeze juice into small bowl. Set aside.
4) Heat olive oil over medium heat in large skillet.
5) Add prosciutto and brown. (Don’t overdo it.)
6) Stir in pasta water, oj, cream and a pinch of zest. Bring to boil.
7) Add pasta and another pinch of zest. Stir to cover pasta in all the juices.
8) Gradually stir in parmesan so that it coats the pasta evenly.
9) Serve.

The Kitchen?
7220 Cherokee |
In this market, buyers are looking for move-in ready homes with updated kitchens, bathrooms, fixtures, new windows, new plumbing, etc. More often than not they will choose a home that has a new kitchen rather than one with pea-green appliances from the 70’s. Buyers like the couple from Young House Love who are seeking fixer-uppers are hard to come by.
When deciding to sell, you have to pick your battles. Should you redo all of it? The best thing to do would be to keep up with your home. I’ve advised you time and time again to maintain your home. If you don’t, you’re definitely going to run into problems when it comes time to sell.
The best thing to do is to keep up with the times. Make sure you pick things that are current. Don’t go crazy unless you plan on staying there for a while. You might love bright green cabinets in your kitchen, but the buying public will most likely beg to differ. On the other hand, enjoy your home while you’re living there!
When faced with the decision to sell, this kitchen needed a major overhaul. The cabinets, floors, appliances, and countertops had to go! There were marks on the countertop from when the owner used it as a cutting board. The cabinets were flimsy and ancient. The dishwasher and stove were old! Terra cotta tiles made up the floor in the area near the stove and sink.
With some tender love and care, everything was replaced.
Beautiful. This kitchen is neutral, current and classic. Laminate became granite; they added new windows; custom oak cabinets replaced cedar; hardwood was put in the entire kitchen to match the rest of the home; stainless steel appliances were brought in to add the finishing touch.
(Click on the photographs to find out more about this home, which is for sale!)
